The Carrier Air Wing 2 started as the Battle Air Group CVBG-74 in 1945 to fly 46 SBW-4E Helldivers and 96 F4U-4/FG-1D Corsairs. Before a 1947-48 deployment in the Mediterranean, the air group became the CVBG-1, then the CVBG-2 before involvement in Korea. 1961 saw the addition of the A4D-2 Skyhawks, and F-4 Phantoms in 1963. That same year, the air group was renamed the Attack Carrier Wing Two (CVW-2). The carrier wing deployed to Southeast Asia a total of 7 times between the mid-1960s and early 1970s, earning 3 Mig-17 kills in North Vietnam, a Navy Unit Commendation for action in the Gulf of Tonkin, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation for involvement over the Sea of Japan. In the mid-1970s, the CVW-2 was redesignated as Carrier Air Wing Two. The air wing then deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1987, the Indian Ocean for Operation Desert Shield in 1990, and flew 75 hours of operations against Iraq during Desert Storm in 1991. The later 1990s was spent flying in support of Operation Southern Watch and many others across the Western Pacific, Arabian Gulf, and Southern Iraq. In 2002, the wing flew 26 straight days of strikes on Baghdad for Operation Iraqi Freedom. After helping with tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia through Operation Unified Assistance in 2004, the wing deployed again in 2008 and 2010 with multiple operations in the Middle East.
